Was Sir Fred Goodwin rewarded for incompetency and putting people out of jobs?
Sir, If a “normal person” was as incompetent at their job as Sir Fred Goodwin appears to have been they would not be allowed to leave that job with £8.4 million in pension entitlements and a knighthood. You write that he was renowned for sacking people in pursuit of his own personal vision of global expansion (leading article, Jan 20), yet when he left his post he was rewarded with riches beyond the attainment of the majority of us (“Hubris to nemesis: how Fred the Shred became the ‘world’s worst banker’,” Jan 20). There has been much debate recently regarding the pay of footballers (letter, Jan 13), but last time I looked their salaries were not a reward for putting people out of work and the destruction of the hopes and dreams of many people.
