Was Sarah Palin recently on the cover of Newsweek?
If she goes third party, sure she could be bad news for the GOP — nice of Newsweek to care so much about the well-being of the Republican Party. As for “bad news for everybody else,” Palin is obviously “bad news” that people are hungry for. Palin’s book is going bonkers on the bestseller list and is proving to be one of the best stimulus programs the book industry has had in a good while — and Newsweek’s subscription rate is falling and they’re laying off employees by the dozen. The only immediate “bad news” is for Newsweek — and when they do gratuitiously negative pieces on a figure who is looked up to by a demographic that spends a fortune on books… not to mention magazines, Newsweek’s death spiral makes all the more sense. This is why the mainstream newspaper business is dying too — you simply can’t dismiss a huge slice of the news consuming public with your bias without ultimately suffering economically. Newsweek’s cover of Sarah Palin is a nice picture, but the words that accompany it are what grab your attention. The Sarah Palin Newsweek cover exclaims, “How Do You Solve A Problem Like Sarah? She’s bad news for the GOP-and for everybody else too”. Seriously? Does anybody still read Newsweek outside of a visit to the dentist office? Basically what the Newsweek article says is that she (Palin) is singlehandedly responsible for the woes of Senator Lindsey Graham and GOP moderates who would otherwise work with the Obama Administration but won’t for fear of a backlash from Palin supporters. How to solve a problem like the coverage of Sarah Palin? According to Newsweek you take the low road. The weekly magazine, which since its relaunch has opted for increasingly blogosphere-like headlines to generate readers, apparently has decided that the best way to cover Sarah Palin’s reemergence on the national stage is with an old photo from Runner’s World (Palin is well known for running marathons). Wow. Were there no other photos available? Did they perhaps neglect the Google search option in their rush to be as condescending and marginalizing as possible? Maybe so.
