Was public outcry to the Immigration Reform Act justified?

By: Michael Griffin The much-hyped comprehensive immigration reform bill failed over the summer, due largely to punitively draconian amendments and a national fervor, sometimes turning hysterical, over perceived “amnesty.” It was baffling to see the majority of televised news media, from Fox News to Lou Dobbs, come together so cohesively and make a penalty of five thousand dollars, a “touch-back” requirement (to cleanse the illegal alien of their illegality; kind of like baptismal for an evil-doer immigrant), and up to a 10-year wait period for citizenship sound like an unqualified pardon.
