Was Plan Colombia actually helping to eliminate the growth and distribution of illicit drugs?
It has turned out that all the money and time that has been put into making Plan Colombia a reality has been wasted. Though it seemed like a slightly logistical idea on paper, it has done nothing but cause negative effects. In fact, after the Plan had been instated and had been under way for some time the came out and said that the street level cocaine prices in the United States were not rising. This meant one thing, though they were destroying what they considered to be a large amount of the coca crop, they were not taking out enough to create even a meek shortage in supply. If the actions taken under Plan Colombia had affected the coca crop even in the slightest bit, supply would have fallen causing a price increase of some kind. So the fact that the prices remained the same even after the plan was in affect proved the fact that it was ineffective.[11] Part was due in fact to the way in which they were going about eradicating the coca crops. The army was attempting to kill coca crop
