Was Mary Queen of Scots guilty of her Treason?
Elizabeth probably would have let Mary live as a prisoner forever. However, Mary knew of the Babington Plot. Babington, wrote to Mary about the plot and she wrote back. Being imprisoned, all her letter were read (and deciphered if they were encoded). The letter she wrote back was kept and a forged replacement was sent. She didn’t make or participate in the plan, but she gave it an OK. Elizabeth went out of her way not to have Mary executed, she dawdled in signing the warrent, she tried bribing a guard to ensure Mary had an “accident” before her execution. The execution was carried out immediatly, without Elizabeth’s permission, for which her secretary spent time imprisoned for.
