Was Martin really Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s given name?

Both Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his father were born Michael Luther King. “Daddy” King changed his name and his son’s when the younger King was 5, according to the King Library and Archives at the King Center in Atlanta. A librarian at the center several years ago gave me two theories for the reason behind the change. One was that it followed a visit by King Sr. to Wittenberg, Germany, where Martin Luther started the Protestant Reformation in 1517; the other was that he was fulfilling a promise to name his son after a relative.
