Was Machu Picchu the city that the Spanish thought of as El Dorado?
The Spanish were hoping all the ancient American cities were “El Dorado”. Coronado traveled from one adobe brick town in North America to another hoping all might be “it”. Ponce de Leon bathed in every river and creek in the southeast of NA hoping one was the “Fountain of Youth”. These guys were very naive and adolescent minded Europeans, wandering about rather aimlessly…following wisps and rumors. A good way for a village or tribe to get rid of them was to tell them that “over the next mountain range”…were the “Seven Cities of Cibola”,…”Cities of Gold”.
