Was Lee Todd good for University of Kentucky athletics and maybe even college athletics in general?
Newton: “Certainly he has. He has done a great job for the university and for athletics during his time here.” Question: What has he done best? Newton: “He was very supportive of intercollegiate athletics. He has his wife, Patsy, both were great fans of the university and the athletics department. They supported everything. They would be on the field at every football game, every basketball court. Every basketball game I attended, they were there. Obviously, he gave (UK athletics director) Mitch (Barnhart) the kind of support and freedom to run the athletics department, which is what a president has to do.” Question: Is that rare for a university president to provide that support like Lee Todd did? Newton: “It’s what you have to have. If you are an athletics director, you have to have the support of your president and direct access to the president.
