Was Kersten absent from history class?
Someone please remind Ms. Kersten (Star Tribune, Aug. 30) of her American history lessons, i.e., the Boston Tea Party, the blocking of the Stamp Act by masked men, the events leading up to the Boston Massacre, the Coercive Acts (that’s the right to assembly), the British move to unarm the colonists (that’s the right to bear arms). Oh and don’t forget the anti-war protests of the Civil War, both for and against slavery. Some were afraid the freed slaves would migrate north and take away jobs (sound familiar?). Violence erupted many times during these events. Don’t forget the draft dodgers of the Civil War resisting the Conscription Act. Americans have been protesting both with and without violence since the beginning. Ms. Kersten must have missed class when those parts of her American history lessons were taught.
