Was just anyone allowed to compete in the ancient olympic games?

Free born Greek Men and Boys were allowed to and competed in separate contests. They were separated by age, height and strength. Married Women weren’t aloud to take part in the Ancient games or even attempt to watch the games as there was a death penalty if they attempted to. Even today women are restricted to compete in some Olympic sports. The only event they were allowed to be part of were equestrian events e.g. Chariot Racing. The first winner of the Chariot racing was a woman called ‘Belistiche’.
