Was Jesus a handsome man?
Not much is said of the physical characteristics of Jesus in the Bible but it would suggest “plain John”. Here is what the Bible tells us as regards the physical appearance of Jesus: Isaiah 52:2 …He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. As “the Lamb of God,” Jesus was without defect, so perhaps this could mean that he was a fine-looking man. ( see John 1:29; Hebrews 7:26) He perfectly mirrored his Father, “the happy God.” See 1 Timothy 1:11; Luke 10:21; Hebrews 1:3. He evidently wore a beard, which is attested to in a prophecy concerning his suffering. See Isaiah 50:6. Even among his apostles, Jesus apparently did not stand out as being very different physically, for Judas had to betray him to his enemies with an identifying kiss. Thus, Jesus could readily blend in with the crowd. And he did, for on at least one occasion, he traveled unrecognized from Galilee to Jerusalem.—Mark 14:44; John 7:10, 11.
No one painted His portrait or sketched His image while He was alive — but I have no doubt that He was physically strong and courageous. On one occasion, for example, Jesus took a whip and forcefully expelled from the Temple the merchants who were cynically using it to make money — which hardly sounds like the work of a meek and mild sissy! (You can read about this in John 2:13-17). Remember also that Jesus was able to speak to vast open-air crowds — something requiring great physical strength. His intense schedule — with thousands of people flocking around him almost every day — also was physically demanding. More than that, Jesus knew His enemies were waiting for an opportunity to kill Him — and yet He did not waver or shrink back from the task God had given Him to do. In spite of the danger, He would not be diverted from His calling: “My food … is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work” (John 4:34).
