I consider him to be at least in the top 3, quite possibly the best. People argue that he didn’t really love music and that he was just a technical robot, but I have to disagree. I’ve heard him play very moving music. Michael Rabin and David Oistrakh were also amazing violinists as is Itzhak Perlman. As far as I know, he didn’t play viola. I suppose he probably could play pretty well if he wanted to, though.

It would be very easy to make the case for Heifetz. But he alone does not make sole claim for such an accolade. You also have to consider Perlman, Grumiaux and Milstein.
