Was Islamic prayer created under a “flat earth” assumption?

Islamic prayer ritual involves bending over towards a fixed spot on earth (Mecca, Saudi Arabia). Obviously such a practice makes more sense under a flat earth conception. A round earth presents the problem of three dimensional confusion. After all, just what direction is a Muslim to pray if he/she happens to be polar opposite to mecca on a round globe? Should the Muslim pray “into” the earth thus making a straight line through the globe into Mecca? Clearly the Mecca-prayer ritual was created under a flat earth viewpoint. The Quran echos this belief in many verses. For example: Quran 20.53 “He Who has, made for you the earth like a carpet spread out;” http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/crcc/engagement/resources/texts/muslim/quran/020.qmt.html Quran 15:19 “And the earth We have spread out (like a carpet); set thereon mountains firm and immovable; and produced therein all kinds of things in due balance.” http://www.usc.edu/schools/college/crcc/engagement/resources/texts/muslim/quran/015.q
