Was Health Net data breach theft?
By ALEX TAYLOR TORRINGTON — A data breach at a Shelton based insurance carrier may be more serious than the company originally disclosed, according to state Attorney General Richard Blumenthal. On Monday, Blumenthal said new details had emerged over Health Net’s loss of a hard drive containing private personal and financial information as well as social security numbers of 440,000 customers in Connecticut as well as customers in Arizona, California, New Jersey and New York. Last month, the company disclosed that it lost the hard drive from its Shelton headquarters in May but it waited six months to alert authorities. Health Net also said the information contained on the hard drive could only be read with specialized software and said none of its costumers had reported any cases of identity theft.
