Was Fishbourne Typical Of A Roman Villa?
Fishbourne was more of a palace than a typical Roman villa. It has been theorised that Fishbourne was constructed as a reward for Verica of the Atrebates for helping the Roman invasion. The main differences are in scale and luxury. Fishbourne was much larger and more lavishly equipped than most Roman villas. Typical Roman villas are more like well-equipped farms with good accomodation for the inhabitants, somewhat similar to country manor houses, whereas Fishbourne was more of a grand statement and power centre, like Blenheim Palace or similar.
