Was FDR an alcoholic?

I like Skyler May’s answer. It depends on your definition of “alcoholic.” Indications from historical sources I have read are that he drank alcohol every day. Did he have life damaging consequences? Maybe not. I know of no account indicating that he ever tried to stop drinking alcohol and failed. My dad drank beer every day for the 50 plus years that I knew him, but he never missed a day of work, was never arrested for anything, never received any kind of driving ticket, and I never saw him drunk or incapacitated by alcohol. My grandparents – all four of them – also drank alcohol every day throughout the FDR years 1933 to 1945. None of them ever missed work, received a driving ticket, or tried to quit. Definitions of alcoholism vary.
