Was emperor Ashoka responsible for weakening Indian borders?
No, Asoka was the first Indian emperor who helped India become politically and religiously linked to other parts of the world, and not just through trade like earlier. Through his envoys of Buddhism, he not only gave shape to this religion the way it is at present, but also helped integrate India in the rest of the world. But, this did not lead to the weakening of India’s borders–Asoka may have given up military confromtation, but he still took security pretty seriously. He had built fortifying walls around important cities and his army was still well-maintained, though not in use.
May I ask ‘ what was Indian boarder’ during 273 B.C. The question doesn’t make any sense of history at all. ‘Magadha’ was the first empire Asoka was the emperor of Mourya dynasty of Magadha.272 – 232 B.C There exist a number of small kingdoms with regional territorial supremacy. The basic premise that Asoka weakened the Khyber pass is utterly wrong. Yes he dismantled his army in search of peace and it it was one reason for the fall of Mouryan dynasty. It is also historically accepted that Asoka was undisputed the greatest king of the world. The concept of unified India or an Indian border was not in existence during that period. North western boarder was never secured. In fact, much earlier than Asoka’s regime Greek invasion was made from the north western boarder. A minimum geographycal sense tells us that other three Indian boundaries are covered by Himalayan mountain range and ocean while north-Western boundary was the oly way of foreign invasion. It is childish historical sense to bl
Emperor Ashoka adopted Buddhism & made it the official religion of Magadh ie almost whole of North India. And he made rules that enforced the practices of Buddhist principles like Nonviolence,Compassion to mankind, abstension from stealing etc. This I hope finally led to the dismantling of his powerful army and weakening of borders to the invaders from beyong Khyber & Bolan.
