Joe Eichler was a ‘merchant builder,’ a developer who built middle-class housing on a large scale (meaning hundreds of homes in a year). He was not an architect, but he was one of the few merchant builders of his era to hire nationally known professional architects to design his houses, starting in 1950 and continuing until his death in 1974.
