Was dropping the Atom bomb justified?

This discussion has spinned off another thread (link points to the beginning of the discussion in the other thread, its interesting, if sometimes sureal, reading from there on) I personally have always thought that is now agreed by everyone that dropping the two atomic bombs constitues a war crime and was a historical mistake. I was shocked to learn from the posts in the above thread, that many people believe that dropping of the bombs was justified, as was other operations, like the bombing of the German city of Dresden (which is regarded as British retaliation for the bombing and destruction of the city of Coventry, three years earlier) I understand I was mistaken regarding general opinion of the act of dropping the bomb and I want to hear more opinions, from Americans as well as other nationalities.
