Was Christopher Marlows Tamburlaine a historical figure?

Yes – Timur-i-leng , Emperor of Samarkand in the fourteenth century conquered the Persians, Turks, the Syrians and the Tartars and died from natural causes as he was attempting to conquer China. It reads more like a game of Risk than a biography! Tamburlaine is one of my favourite plays – it is great the device of him using kings as footstools and that simply unfurling his banner makes opposing armies surrender to him.
