Was British Steel a nationalised company ?

Yes and it was sold to Corus. However much we all hate the idea of unemployment with the frustration and bitterness that brings, there is little point in producing manufactures if mo one wants to or can afford to buy them. Sadly it was one of the wiser if unpopular decisions of Maggie T and removes political interference from the business which was losing money hand over fist for little if any benefit to the economy. Sadly we all depend on profit to live and nationalised industries become top heavy and lose money. Political inteferernce has the same result. We can only hope that this lot put into place those things needed for a fast recovery in the economic situation and full gainful profitable employment.

Formed as a nationalised business under the Iron and steel act in 1967 by Harold Wilson the company was made up from the assets of 14, originally private, companies. It was privatised by the Thatcher government of 1988 and is today part of the Indian TATA group.
