Was Britain the most powerful country when it was colonizing countries in the 1800s? Why?
An industrialising economy and sea power important for colonisation , trade and naval supremacy. The major continental European powers at that time were still preccupied with European territorial issues and although they maintained larger armies than Britain they had insufficient naval resources to compete with Britain further afield.
