Was Britain entering world war 2 unesscessary?
Well Hitler/Germany demostrated that he would not keep to his treaties, ask the USSR. Even if the UK had not entered WW2 after Germany invaded Poland the UK, like the USA, would have eventually been pulled into the war. Germany would have conquered all of Europe (he pretty much did) and then turned to the UK and would have been able to single them out. Also at this point he may have attacked the USSR first, conquered them, then turned to the UK making their job of defense much harder. Had the UK not entered the war and France would have still vowed to protect Poland, France would have lost much quicker as the British and French armies were able to stall Hitler for a bit not very long.
Britain did not enter into a war with Germany unecessarily, it was to stop the expansionist plans of the Fascist Party of Germany. Hitler had agreed in 1938 not to take any other territory from any other country and agreed not to support any other claims, he reneged the agreement early in 1939 with the final invasion of slovakia the annexation of memel and then the demand for Danzig a city that had been granted free city status and was protected by the League of Nations. If Danzig was the only part of Poland that had been taken, then I doubt if the goverment would have taken the war step, as by September 1939 Danzig had become an insignificant city as the Polish had just completed a new Port complex, but Hitler invaded the whole of Poland, this was intolerable and as England and France had a treaty with the Poles to protect them it would have been wrong to turn our backs on them, especially after Munich. Of course we had to , who would have trusted any “agreement” we might have made with Adolf Hitler he was a maniac If we had left him alone to do whatever he wanted in Europe he would have turned his attention to us at some stage and he would have been much stronger by that time too In any case how can you argue the decision to go to war with all the detail we subsequently discovered about his genocide of Jews / Gypsies/ Homosexuals / Handicapped etc . We had to pay for that war for over 50 years , but without engaging in it we would be in a sorry state now , even sorrier that we are !!!
