Was Australia really inhabited by people before Europe?

Humans were definitely in Australia before America. Apparently they have found evidence of Cro-Magnon man in Europe dating back about 40,000 years. That’s about the same time frame as the earliest evidence of humans in Australia. I have heard earlier dates quoted for the first inhabitation of Australia, but I don’t know how good the evidence is for that. (Not saying its wrong, just that I don’t know.) I think you could make an argument either way about whether homo sapiens arrived first in Australia or Europe.
