Was Anne Frank German or Dutch?
The Frank family fled from Germany in 1933 and settled in Amsterdam. Anne Frank remained with her grandmother and joined the family in 1934. In her diary she writes: “Margot went to Holland in December, and I followed in February, when I was plonked down on the table as a birthday present for Margot.” The family retained their German nationality until the end of 1941, when the so-called ‘Reichburgergesetz’ meant all German-Jewish refugees lost their German nationality. Otto Frank was the only member of the family to survive. After the war he applied for Dutch nationality, which he received on December 22, 1949.
