Although it’s not a perfect method, it is possible for an application to make an educated guess about whether the call was answered by a machine or not by using the tag. Normally, an answering machine will play a message that will last longer than a typical person’s greeting, and you can use the duration of the to make that guess. Subsequent prompts played by the application can be tailored based on that guess. An alternate method is simply to prompt the remote party for a specific utterance and/or DTMF key sequence. In the future, BeVocal plans to support Call Progress Analysis as a more automated way to detect answering machines.
