Urgent!! Has anyone tried Bitter Melon supplement for Diabetes type 1?
Since your mother is type 1 diabetic, she has to take insulin shots for her whole life. There is no alternative to it at the moment. The reason is because her body does not produce insulin at all, and to breakdown the glucose from food, she needs insulin from external source. However, the amount of insulin needed can be reduced by controlling her diet and some moderate exercise like walking for 30 minutes twice a day. A low carbohydrate diet will release less glucose in blood and less insulin will be needed. Regarding bitter melon (bitter gourd), yes it is helpful for controlling Type 2 diabetes because it has active anti diabetes compounds which act like oral anti diabetic drugs. However, as I said before, like oral drugs are ineffective it will also not work on Type 1 Diabetes. Anyway, you mother can safely consume it and it will not do any harm either. It is good source of vitamin C, folate and dietary fiber.
