I’ve got an overclocked Opteron 165 with 2 gigs of ram now and I’m wondering if upgrading to an i7 proc would be worth the cash. The most intensive work I do involves FEA and numerical analysis with Matlab, lots of CAD and FEA with with commercial solutions such as Solidworks, Solidworks Cosmos, Fluents, Ansys, Pro-E, Catia and so fourth. Currently, the computer is capable of doing all that I need but, sitting around waiting for solutions to converge in matlab or ansys can be a big waste of time. I figure, around 600 dollars maximum for the new motherboard, ram and proc. Do you guys think I’d see a significant increase in performance (greater than 25%)?
