Unlike Europe, Britain is an island, how many more people can we fit in before it becomes intolerable?

The world is an island in space. Yes, there is a limit beyond which mankind will become extinct. This extinction will be hastened by war as all borders pushed. If you try to create a bubble with a lower population pressure inside, once the pressure outside exceeds the strength of the border, the resulting inrush of population will be more sudden and violent than if there were free travel. Think of it in terms of a permiable membrane v.s. an impermiable membrane. The answer to overpopulation is education. We can either help other countries become affluent and educated, or we can remain isolationist and warlike and eventually be over run.

What does being an island have to do with anything? Britain is a peice of land like any other country. It is bigger than some, like Holland or Belgium, smaller than France or Germany, similar size to Italy. UK is not very much more crowded than other countries like Italy or Germany, less crowded than Holland or Belgium, but France is less crowded still. Within the UK, population is very much concentrated in the South-East, for which you can blame successive governments, especially Margaret Thatcher’s for destroying Northern industries; on the other hand, France and Germany both have areas of concentrated population, around Paris and the Ruhr respectively. The problem is not too many people, but a lack of proper planning and good public services. It is to do with long-term public policies, and not the fault of immigrants.

Not only do we have record immigration, we also have record emigration. That means the total number of people on the island is rising at approximately the same rate as the rest of the world, apart from Africa, where they are decimated by AIDS, famine and war. Families are smaller and we all want more living space now, and we love to keep building motorways, too. All this is heavy on land use, and can give the illusion that the population is rising. But this is not what you mean, is it ? You mean there are too many people who do not look or talk like you. You use the bogus “overcrowding” argument to mask your racism. As a white pensioner, I am fed up with people like you giving our generation such a bad name.

You need to check the facts. 92% of Britain is rural land. The people are crowded in to just 8%. This is due to the history of the UK and the richer upper classes owning all of the land via feudal landowning. The (poor) people are concentrated in to the remaining 8%). You can change this by expanding land availability through various mechanisms. Britain isn’t crowded, it’s only the cities that are crowded. Don’t believe me? Take a drive around the UK through the rural areas and see how sparsely populated these are compared to the suburban areas of London, Birmingham, Liverpool Glasgow etc. Go to Kent, Devon, Cornwall, Lancashire and so on. Many, many more millions can (and will) live here. Immigration has been unstoppable throughout history. So what makes you think you can stop what couldn’t be stopped in most parts of the world throughout history? Britain is an island with a narrow moat separating in from the European mainland. Britain is part of the wider world and thinking we can st
