United States presidential election, 2008
The United States presidential election of 2008 was held on Tuesday, November 4, 2008. Democrat Barack Obama, the junior United States Senator from Illinois, won decisively, defeating Republican Party nominee, John McCain, the senior United States Senator from Arizona. Incumbent Republican President George W. Bush’s policies and McCain’s support for them, in both foreign and domestic matters, were key issues throughout the campaign. Domestic policy and the economy eventually emerged as the main themes in the last few months of the election campaign, particularly after the onset of the 2008 economic crisis. In naming Obama its 2008 “Person of the Year”, Time magazine described his election as the result of “the steady march of seemingly impossible accomplishments”.[1] It was the 56th consecutive quadrennial United States presidential election.
