uninspired?
I caught most of the MSG shows and I remember this one as being uninspired, and by that I mean Jerry was not up for it.I think Jerry would have rather been resting back in Marin. Its pretty well known (in Phil’s book) that Jerry was not inspired during this time and needed a break but they could not do it for money reasons. Some shows will reveal this and I think this is one of them. Jerry carries off the tunes but just does not seem to be digging in. The rest of the band sounds tight however. Even now the setlist looks great on paper but I recall the energy in the garden as muted on this night. I could be wrong but other shows from this tour stand out as having much more energy than this one. The Picasso Moon is very good as someone mentioned, and I would say the highlight of a rather listless first set. I can picture Jerry having to open thinking, “Oh ive gotta open, I don’t feel like playing Touch of Grey, Miss 1/2 Step, Shakedown, ugh let me try Iko maybe that will get me going”. I
