In patients who do not have gallstones at the time of surgery only 4% subsequently develop stones. We therefore only remove the gallbladder in patients who have stones diagnosed before or during surgery.

We therefore only remove the gallbladder in patients who have stones diagnosed before or during surgery. In general we do not remove the gallbladder unless it is diseased or there is a strong family history or gallstones and gallbladder removal.
