A. Zakumi is the official mascot for the 2010 World Cup Soccer. The Leopard with green hair was born on 16 July 1994, which coincided with Youth Day. This day is an annual commemoration of the 1976 Soweto uprising, during which students and learners where shot by the police while protesting against Bantu education. Furthermore, 1994 is the year South Africa became a democracy. The name ‘Zakumi’ comes from “ZA”, the international code for South Africa, and “Kumi”. This means ‘ten’ in Swahili and other African languages. The yellow and green colours of Zakumi’s represent the colours used in South African sport uniforms.
