Turning lane vs. raised median for Abernathy Road?
Numerous studies have shown that a raised median substantially reduces accident and injury rates on roadways compared to a continuous two-way left-turn lane. The median eliminates mid-block accidents and mid-block traffic congestion. The existing daily traffic volumes on Abernathy Road are 22,500 vehicles and are projected to reach 34,600 by 2026. The Georgia Department of Transportation will not participate in any roadway widening with volumes over 22,000 vehicles per day for the projected year unless the design includes a raised median.
