True North Church: Whos truth is it anyway?
Relativism-it’s the idea that “truth” varies from one person to the next. It depends on our own values, experiences and ideas about what is right and wrong. If you have been a Christian for a while, you’ve probably heard about how rampant relativism is. It’s a great evil influence of our time. Or is it? I’ve been one of those people demanding that there IS absolute truth in the world. How can anyone honestly think anything else!? Over time, though, I’ve watched how this attitude has created more and more division between people. Rather than convincing people, we are driving them further away. Over the past couple of years, I have begun to look more closely at what our culture today looks like. What are the attitudes and ideas that shape the way we live our lives today? In the process, I’ve had a surprising realization. I think I understand why it’s common to say that “truth” is not the same for everyone.
