Trichotomy versus Dichotomy—which part, soul or spirit, is saved to go to heaven (please give verses)?
In other words, is man a two-part or a three-part being? Does he consist of body and soul, or does he possess body, soul and spirit? The theory that man is a dichotomous being—this view offers the following two arguments to support dichotomy: (1) Material and non-material—Man is a dichotomous being not just because of the plan of God, but because of the very nature of the universe, which only recognizes material and non-material. (2)Terms soul and spirit used interchangeably in the Bible—Often in the Bible the terms soul and spirit are used interchangeably. The Virgin Mary seems to do this very thing during her hymn of praise to God. “And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour” (Luke 1:46-47).
