• The HIV virus can “hide” dormant in cells where it is beyond the reach of HIV drugs; and • HIV vaccines to date have not proven effective. The drugs control the reproduction of the virus and slow the progression of HIV-related disease. These drugs make possible for people to live with HIV longer. But, Anti-HIV medications do not cure HIV infection, and individuals taking these medications can still transmit HIV to others. 2. How long will it take to develop a vaccine against HIV / AIDS? Despite continued intensive research, experts believe it will be at least a decade before we have a safe, effective and affordable vaccine against HIV.
