Toyota Rav4 randomly shuts off about once a month; then it starts right back up and runs great.NO WARNING?
This seems to be a relatively common issue. My 2000 Toyota Rav4 randomly shuts off about once a month; no warning signs are given and no codes are thrown. Mechanics can’t duplicate the problem and it is very dangerous when it occurs. This vehicle has 116,000 miles, and it never acted up until about 10,000 miles ago. A Toyota “expert” suggested I replace the ignition coils, which costs over $100 and failed to fix the problem. There seems to be no consistencies in the various times it has acted up. Once it dies, the dash lights all come on immediately and the vehicle always starts right up. Prior to the issue starting I did regular maintainence to a vehicle with 100,000 + miles; I replaced the muffler, the fuel filter and put new spark plugs in (I did put one electrode plugs in instead of two). Does anyone have any ideas as to what to do to solve this mystery? The consensus seems to be it is an electrical problem (possibly an ignitial swich issue or the main computer?). Thanks in advance
