This is a great question, I am very glad you asked it. Going in your order, I like Holland’s ‘Totaly Football’ because it allows you so many options. You could change your formation from a 5-4-1 to a 3-4-3 without substituting at all. On a similar note, it is easy for players to switch with eachother, creating good combinations. As far as Italy’s ‘Catenaccio’, well, I absolutely despise it with all of the molecules in my body. I believe it to be one of the reasons, and indeed the origination really, for games with fewer than three goals scored. And, indeed, games with no goals scored. Now, this system does work very well, if all you care about winning. But if you see a really exciting match with lots of attacking football, you know that Catenaccio is not present. A style very likely to be present is Brazil’s ‘Samba’.
