Top of PageWill Canadas effort be enough to stem the change in climate?
Climate change is a global problem that requires global solutions. At their Summit in Hokkaido, Japan in July 2008, G8 Leaders agreed to work towards a reduction of at least 50% in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. G8 Leaders also agreed to implement ambitious economy-wide mid-term goals to achieve absolute emissions reductions. Canada has committed to achieving a 20% reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 and a 60-70% reduction by 2050. Achieving these ambitious emission reductions while continuing to grow the global economy will require the effective participation of all major emitters and the development and deployment of clean energy and transportation technologies. Even with dramatic action to reduce emissions, the global climate will continue to change in the next two decades in response to past emissions. That is why the Government of Canada is investing now to help Canadians and developing countries adapt to the impacts of a changing climate.
