Top of PageWhat is the Kyoto Protocol?
The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The defining feature of the Kyoto Protocol is that it sets binding targets for 37 industrialized countries and the European community for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Kyoto Protocol was adopted on December 11, 1997 and entered into force on February 16, 2005. 184 Parties of the Convention have ratified its Protocol to date. The Government of Canada has put a tremendous amount of effort into its domestic plan to fight climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We are also committed to working constructively with our international partners towards a successor agreement to the Kyoto Protocol.
