Top of PageHow are ice types described in the ice forecasts?
Ice types are described based on the thickness of the ice cover within a marine area. For example, “new” ice refers to ice with a thickness less than 10 cm. “Grey” ice refers to ice with a thickness of 10 cm or more, but less than 15 cm. The ice description will state the predominant ice type first. The thickest ice type, if present, will be stated second. There may be other ice types present, but only the predominant and thickest types are mentioned in the ice forecast bulletins. For more information about different ice types, please refer to the Canadian Ice Service website.
