I planned on being a rock star, but that didn’t really work out. So I became a machinist. I eventually got a fellowship at the University of Oregon and got my MFA there. Then I taught English in South Korea for a year, and traveled to Russia, the United Arab Emirates, and Japan. I had lots of adventures. I joined the Army at age 30. When I left Iraq, I moved back to Fresno. I had been gone for 10 years and I wanted to get to know my parents again. I didn’t want to move back at first, but I realized that it was a steppingstone for something, and that was reestablishing my old relationships again.
