Though RDI is the gold stardard, can we still utilize other information gathered from polysomnography, such as FS, SSS, SOL, and REM?
RDI (>10) is the only variable that is uniquely indicative of sleep apnea. The other variables (FS, SSS, SOL, REM) can be altered in a number of sleep disorders (eg, insomnia) and so they are non-specific variables for sleep apnea. That’s why RDI is used – regardless of what else the patient may have, if their RDI =25, they have sleep apnea.
