Thinking about Cameron; was Samuel Johnson right when he said: “Patriotism is the last refuge of a Scoundrel”?
I do not read the mail, I see no reason to now. Samuel Johnson, he lead a very interesting life. I do agree that as an absolute, A ‘patriot’, a ‘religious’ etc etc does seem to a degree a safe haven for some. Lets be real, most Patriots & Religious people are concerned with their ‘own’ brands welfare? Is that wrong?
Johnson was referring to a comment by John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute. He wasn’t questioning true patriotism. I was suspicious however when Cameron said in his spring conference speech today that “It is an election we have a patriotic duty to win because this country is in a complete and utter mess, and we have to sort it out………..,” (Loughborough Echo). Is there an implication there that Labour are not patriotic? It smacks a little of Thatcher’s ‘the enemy within’ comment during the miners strike.
