Our pride, our “hubris” as the old Greeks called it, has always been considered to be a fatal flaw. But it is not a flaw in our nature. As God’s children, we must have free will to do great good, even when it seems like that will be to our own disadvantage; or to reject God’s authority over us, when it seems like to do so would result in more pleasures of this world. Yes, the sacrifice of Christ is necessary for God to be able to forgive us for frequently making the wrong choices. But the “flaw” is not a design flaw; it is entirely of our own making.
