NO IT DOES NOT LEAK! See below. It is used for extra R value (“R” ,insulating value=measurement of heat flow through a surface) it helps with noise level as well. It, combined with Low-E glass will give you the same R-value as triple pane glass without the added weight of a 3rd pane of glass. If, by chance it is allowed to leak it is because the seal of the 2 panes of glass has been broken down. (It is an inert gas) The seal can be broken down due to the way the glass is put together and ‘sealed’ at the factory. Many types of sealants are used to do this, it depends on the manufacturer. There’s also silica gel in the spacer to help prevent moisture from collecting on the inside of the panes when sealed, once you start seeing the moisture between the panes, the seal has failed therefore it would have to be re-glazed.
