Houses or units are modelled as being made up of zones, usually determined by walls enclosing a space that is separated from another space by a door that can be closed. Generally rooms determine zones. The ventilation is determined by the external and internal openings to those zones. Currently permanent openings cannot be considered as boundaries between zones. Areas that are attached to the house that have permanent openings, like verandahs, are not considered as zones. They affect the zones they are adjacent to by shading walls and windows and are modelled as such. The zone “type” determines if and when heating and cooling is available to that zone. It also determines the amount of internal heating from people and the operation of appliances and devices. Zones of type “Living” and “Living/Kitchen” have heating and cooling available when needed from 7 am to 12 pm. In zones of type “Sleeping”, heating and cooling is available from 4 pm to 9 am.
