Coordinate immediately, and closely, with the appropriate CARE (or CARE designated) veterinarian. Emergency CARE Contact Information. They are authorized to provide emergency veterinary care including changes to your approved procedures that will reduce pain, distress or illness in animals. They are also authorized to euthanize animals exhibiting unbearable pain, distress or illness (even if euthanasia was not authorized as part of your protocol). Report any unanticipated pain or distress, morbidity, or mortality to the appropriate CARE (or CARE approved) veterinarian, and notify the IACUC of any significant unexpected events that affect the welfare of the animals. Contact the IACUC to see if an amendment to your protocol will be required. Guidance can also be provided by CARE.
