There is a proposal to designate the Melrose Heights/Oak Lawn area near Dreher as a historic district. What does that mean?
The City of Columbia can designate an area as a Design Preservation District. According to the city, the purpose is to protect and maintain features which are of economic, social, cultural and architectural significance to the history of Columbia. Any property owner living within a Design Preservation District must get approval from the Design Development Re- view Commission before making any additions or exterior changes to a building. For example, adding shutters Or fencing, or changing windows or doors would not be allowed without permission from the city. Plans must be submitted for review and approval.
